Why gas? Why not wood?

Conventional wood fireplaces are extraordinarily INEFFICIENT, averaging between -10% and +10% energy efficiency. Tests have revealed that in most instances (on cold winter days/nights), the use of a conventional fireplace will result in an INCREASE in fuel consumption when heating your home. Today, many gas fireplaces are tested and certified to room heater or wall furnace standards, with some operating at 80% efficiency and above.

From an environmental standpoint, propane and natural gas burn significantly cleaner than wood, (a solid fuel you'd have to purchase and store). The logs used in gas fireplaces do not produce ashes. Also, gas fireplaces provide the benefits of both radiant and convective heat. The convection can be natural, or enhanced by a blower system. The radiant component will gently warm you on a cold winter night. Finally, many gas fireplaces feature heat exchangers which can boost BTU or heat output significantly. With a gas fireplace you get all the charm and warmth of a glowing wood fire, even if your power goes out.

Natural Gas

If you already have natural gas piped into your home, common sense argues you install a natural gas fireplace. Natural gas actually burns cleaner than propane. Propane, or liquid petroleum gas (LPG), is a processed gas. Again, if you have natural gas in your home, installing a natural gas fireplace should be the least expensive alternative.

Liquid Propane (LPG)

If you live out in the country and don't have access to natural gas, propane gas may be your only option. Liquid propane fireplaces provide warmth and beauty, and should provide years of comfort during cold winters. Propane gas is a more reliable heating source than electricity or wood. If you live in an area with frequent power outages, you should consider propane. Your propane fireplace will continue to heat your home during such an outage.

If you have access to both LPG and natural gas, you might opt for natural gas as it is cleaner burning than propane, and typically easier to obtain (as it is piped in).
